Hence the composition date above – the 15th of June. That date every year is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Does elder abuse need an annual recognition day? Age Concern's viewAge Concern New Zealand certainly thinks it does. They are having a whole week of Elder Abuse Awareness beginning on the UN sponsdored World Day. Here is a paragraph from their website. Profound but avoidable - more from Age Concern'The impact of elder abuse is profound for older people, but also avoidable if they get help and intervention services early. 'It is a myth to think that elder abuse is not family violence - it is! And like any family violence, we all need to step up and call it out and report it when we see or suspect it. FACT: 84% of alleged abusers are family members. FACT: 58% of the alleged abusers are adult children or grandchildren.' What to doDr Ayesha Verrall, New Zealand's Minister for Seniors says:
WidespreadAccording to the World Health Organisation 'Abuse of older people is an important public health problem. A 2017 review of 52 studies in 28 countries from diverse regions estimated that over the past year 1 in 6 people (15.7%) aged 60 years and older were subjected to some form of abuse.' Because I'm in Aotearoa New Zealand most of the information I'm quoting is from my own country but I'm sure from what I read that similar avenues, alerts and helps are available everywhere.
