'Regen ag'Over the last few months I've read or watched in New Zealand media a number of news items about farmers flocking to regenerative agriculture field days. And I've learnt a new term – 'regen ag.' If you are not familiar with regenerative agriculture, I invite you to take 23 minutes of your day to watch the story of Peter Barret, on Linnburn Station, in the Maniototo, Central Otago, one of the harshest farming environments in New Zealand. Whether you live in New Zealand or in some other country, I think you'll find this wee film fascinating to watch. Is it showing the way to a better future? Please turn on your computer sound and hit the white arrow. In the course of the video there are two little blank-screen pauses. Please don't turn off the computer. At the video's end, go to the text below. What did you think? I am not a farmer but I have crawled around New Zealand rivers most of my life, fishing for trout. I have therefore walked over and looked at many chunks of farmland. I've seen how stock break down riverbanks; I've noticed how weed and algae growth in rivers changes according to the amount of fertiliser scattered across the land; I've worried about the future. In regen ag I see a lot of hope. □ John McInnes Friday 24 July 2020 References: Regenerative farming NZ a video - Greenpeace. Scroll down to it.
